Whew, tough one today! Rode to the library to return DVDs, out and back. The out leg was mostly downhill with a tailwind so quite fast. But coming back, oof! Lost about a mph in average speed and B. was suffering. If I hadn't had assist, I'd probably be out there riding still. The elevation profile in my app looks like coming down Mt. Ventoux, then going back up...haha! But not quite that bad, only 2214' elev. gain. 835 kcals, 87W. Temp a bit cooler than we've been having - 64 at the start, 74 at the end. Sunny, NE wind. I wore a lightweight LS jersey with lightweight wind vest, shorts, wool socks, which was perfect. Took off the vest at the library. Just right.

Another northeast wind day but pretty nice weather overall, 70s and partly cloudy. Light traffic. B. feeling good today, so I had to use more Tour mode than usual to keep up. Trying out a new pair of Castelli shorts, wasn't sure if I was going to like them at first, but they got better as the ride went on. Nose running a lot, ragweed? 461 kcals, 87 W, 91 rpm.

Epic ride today to and from Chapel Hill, taking a different route each way so a nice loop with a pitstop at a park at the half-way point. Got chased by dogs once, stopping traffic behind us, but they didn't catch us. Amazingly, this was in town, not in the rural area. Owner was yelling at them to stop. After the stop, came home through the hilliest neighborhood I think I've ever been in, though part of Bike Route 1, surprisingly. Was very thankful for the e-assist. Saw lots of other cyclists out, as conditions were close to ideal: Overcast at start, mostly cloudy for most of the ride, sun breaking through at the end, 70 to 78F, light NE breeze, 850 kcals, 88 W (88% Eco)

Warm summer morning ride, nice to see the sun after so many days of rain, but it was muggy, to be sure. Still, not terrible. 73 to 82F, 7-9mph north wind, 932' elev. gain, 446 kcals, 83 watts. Saw three other cyclists out, a rarity where we ride. More traffic than usual, mostly due to a detour that shifted vehicles onto a road we have to ride on quite long ways. Another road repair at a creek from all the summer rain.

Indoor ride - sweatfest - on a rainy morning in NC. Not much climbing (262') but many false flats made this one harder than it looked. 76 w, 145 bpm, 263 kcals.

Overcast at the start, and in the last 5-6 miles some spitting rain, then when we were almost to the house (walking our bikes on the chunky gravel driveway), the heavens let loose. We RAN the bikes up to the front porch and watched the deluge. If we'd been a minute later, we would have been completely drenched, but we did get pretty wet, as it was. Rain wasn't supposed to start for another 1-3 hours, damn weather forecasters! Other than that, a decent ride, though B. was having some pain in the back of his right hip so was fairly sluggish, compared to usual. I felt fine but kept it a bit slower for him. 948' elevation gain, 465 kcals, 83 watts. 94% Eco, 4% Tour (trying to outrun the rain, not very successfully), 2% off.

What a ride! We'd missed our usual long ride on Wed. due to rain, so did it Fri. instead. B. had planned out a partially new route for us, up north but then to the east in a large loop to get back home. He'd seen a road on Google maps he thought was paved but turned out to be gravel after about a mile on pavement. Fortunately, it was nicely packed (more sandy soil than gravel) and fairly flat, so even on his skinny-tired Trek Emonda, was able to handle it, and my gravel bike was just fine, of course. We traveled by farms and fields with nary a vehicle in either direction. Only about 1.5-2 miles of that, but I loved it. A long ride for which I didn't have enough calories on board with one small granola bar and Liquid IV in the pack, but made it just fine. Nice weather, coolish to start (upper 60s) and upper 70s by the end. Three large climbs for a total elevation gain of 1762'. 822 kcals, 90 rpm average, 82 watts.

Had to ride indoors on this rainy day. This was a good ride and harder than the only 521' of elevation gain would imply. Lots of false flats and a few little kickers, one up to 9+%. Lost .28 mph in average speed at the very end due to a couple little climbs. 148 bpm, 412 kcals, 82 watts.

Whew! Hope this is the last of these super high dewpoint rides. It was a real sweatfest, in the 80s w/dewpoint in the 73-75 range. We'd planned a 40-miler, but B. suggested we cut it short, and I was fine with that, of course. Very light wind today did make for a fast ride, and my lower back was the best it's been. I used Tour 11% of the time (mostly to keep up with B.), Eco 89%. 1050' elev. gain, 511 kcals, 82w user power.

Another steamy ride and not so good because B. put a rack on my bike, and I put a trunk bag plus lots of tools on it, didn't think about the rattling potential of the tools, so they clattered around the entire time, which was distracting. The rack, bag, and tools also added weight to my already heavy e-bike, so I felt like the handling was worse, but I may have just been slightly irritated by the extra noise. The rack is coming off until I actually need it for a long utilitarian ride! Ambulances/EMS/police with sirens and flashing lights going the other way added some excitement near the end of the ride. Headwind (N) on the way out, tailwind on the way back. 833' elev. gain, 434 kcals, 81 watts, and a lot of Tour use due to the headwind and then trying to keep up with B. on the way back w/tailwind.

Back to heat and humidity, but no worse than our usual summer rides. Still felt cool when we'd dip down to a creek crossing in shade, but only on the "out" leg. Didn't get passed by a single vehicle until after just over an hour, which is a record! After that, 7 vehicles for the rest of the ride. I'll take it! Had to take two detours due to road closures from TD Chantal. Used Tour mode more than usual (27%) due to headwinds on the way back and hills. Hot & steamy summer ride, temp 80s, dewpoint 70s, light NW wind - odd, as that is usually a "dry" direction, but not today. Full sun. Helped a box turtle across the road, then had to use "Tour" mode to catch back up with Barry, who got quite far ahead. First 40-miler of the year! Didn't intend for it to be quite that long, but storm damage from Chantal forced a detour when we encountered a road closure. That added ~3 miles to the ride. Fantastic "out" leg with a tailwind most of the way; effortless. The new roads we tried were traffic-free, and only one small, slow dog that was no threat, though I am always very alert when we ride rural roads we haven't vetted before. Mostly just forests and fields, fantastic riding. The way back we hit the headwinds, and Barry drafted off me, so I used more assist than I really like, but it got us home fast! Started off with heavy clouds, which was perfect, but the sun came out for our last 10 or so miles, and it felt very hot then. Humid. 1430' elev. gain, 683 kcals, 80w user power.

Thought we weren't going to be able to ride, as power was out this morning after TD Chantal dumped over 9" on us yesterday, and with heat/sunscreen/sweat, a post-ride shower was mandatory (as it always is). Fortunately, power came on just in time to get out. Saw a lot of flooding in low-lying areas, our gravel driveway and road are a MESS, but the paved roads were mostly dry. Some debris here and there, but nothing we couldn't get around. Hot, sunny, humid. 869' elev. gain, 428 kcals, 86 w user power.

Lower dewpoint of 65 made this a much more pleasant ride, though a decent NE breeze made the "out" leg more difficult than usual. I used the assist liberally when the going got too tough (hills + headwinds together). Still, a nice ride. A three-county tour and our longest of the year so far. Hot, humid, sunny, and very windy. Gusts to 25 mph made for tough going at times. We had a cross wind most of the way out and back, only briefly a full headwind or tailwind. The most headwind was on the way back, and I was really lagging, even with assist. Had to rachet up the assist level more than usual to fight the wind. A good ride but the conditions made it harder than normal.

First ride outside in two weeks with all this rainy weather we've been having. Very nice morning, upper 60s to start, low 70s at end, north breeze, sunshine. They finally finished all the road repaving and painting the markings on the roads we commonly ride. Started out with a headwind, but the tailwind sure was nice. Felt strong today, maybe b/c of doing FulGaz (harder b/c no e-assist!) for two weeks. 948' elev. gain, 409 cals, 86 watts average. All Eco mode (plus no motor at the end).

Beautiful ride with several fairly challenging climbs, including a little steep bump at the end that always ticks me down to <13 mph average. One day I'll break that barrier, but today was not it. Warm and humid in my room after 2" of rain outdoors (wet roads kept us inside). 492' elev. gain, 78w, 138bpm (seems too low, I think my HRM may have cut out a few times), 297 cals.

FulGaz crashed near the end of this 20-mile ride, so I had to do the latter part as a separate ride. It was easier so a good cooldown. This part started with a nice downhill/mostly flat warmup for 5 or so miles, then some decent climbing. 780' elevation gain, 79w, 149 bpm, 367 cals.

Did a section ride to get the second half of this longish ride done -- I'd done the first half a few weeks back. This was the easier half. 278' elevation gain, 83w, 151 bpm, 204 cals. Finally put me over 1000 miles on the year, later than I'd hoped.

Nice morning with a light NW wind shifting to W, bright blue sky, low humidity. Temp 69 at start, 76 at end. Slightly more traffic than last Monday, mostly service trucks. Also saw a few cyclists, which is pretty rare out this way, except occasionally on Wednesdays. Barry was feeling better today, so I had to work a little harder to keep up. As a result, a slightly faster ride. 817' elev. gain, 466 kcals, avg user power 85 W.

Lots of road work going on on the rural roads we ride to the north. We were able to ride on the un-tarred lane of a road that had new tar on the other lane but went a different way to avoid that on the way back. One of the roads on that detour had fairly fresh tar, some particles of which spewed onto my legs, so I'll be cleaning the bike later. Will be glad when this project is done, and it will be a big improvement to these roads. Very warm and humid today - mid-70s at the start and low 80s at the end, 75% humidity, but mostly overcast so didn't feel bad. Very light winds. Barry was tired today so fell far behind me; because of that, I ended up riding with the motor off as much as I could in the second half of the ride (18% no motor, 82% Eco). Good ride. The new stem is working out nicely, the saddle sore I was getting from the indoor rides didn't bother me at all (different saddle and some medicated cream helped), and my back is much better. 443 cals, 78w user power, 968' elev. gain.

A beautiful ride in Germany that starts with a 1/3 mile 7% climb, so not ALL recovery. A long descent followed by flattish the rest of the way, just a few small bumps up and down and some false flats. Not quite as much recovery as I expected, but a good workout. 223' elev. gain, 74 w, 148 bpm, 228 cals.

An indoor ride on a rainy day in NC. Gorgeous riding in Germany and Austria. A couple of tough climbs in the 9-10% range, the second one being a full mile long. 1026' elevation gain, 76 w, 148 bpm, 458 cals. I need a new saddle on my indoor bike...owie!

The bad: Got chased by a dog (persistent but probably just playing), blasted by high-pitched backup warning sound by a truck (OUCH, my ear!), and Ira being paved so spewed gray dust on our bikes. The good: The front-end twitchiness and wandering I experienced on our last ride was due to the headset being loose after a stem change. Perfectly fine this time, whew! Lower back much better w/this new stem. Nice day - mid-60s to low-70s, NW breeze, partly sunny, traffic not bad. 873' elevation gain, 421 cals, 82 w avg user power.

Perfect day for a ride! Temp in mid-upper 60s to 70, low humidity, sunshine, light NNW wind. Only got passed by 3 vehicles in over 90 mins! The new (shorter and w/more rise) stem is going to take some getting used to, front end very squirrely. My back wasn't perfect but was better, so overall I think it's a net positive, especially once I get used to the difference in handling. 1027' elev. gain, 438 cals, 82 avg watts user power.

Same route we did one day last week. Upper 60s to low 70s, mostly cloudy, light wind, light traffic. 879' elevation gain, 360 cals, avg user power 84W. Had to use "Tour" mode more than usual (14% of ride) to keep up with my speedy husband - who doesn't even ride an ebike!

Added on a couple more miles from the same route we did on Wed. More traffic today - could tell it was a Friday. Breezy from the SW, sunny, warm (70s), still very decent riding weather. Lower back pain (new stem coming soon). 78 w user input, 391 cals, 971' elevation gain

They finished sealing all the new chip-seal rural roads on this ride, so it was pretty pleasant riding compared to before. We only got passed by ONE car until one hour in, when the second passed us. Five total during the ride - sweet. Still having lower back issues but have ordered a new stem, a little shorter and w/a bit more rise, so we'll see if that helps. 81 w, 361 cals. Temp in the 70s, light WSW breeze.

Breezy (started w/a tailwind) and mostly overcast, temp in the low 70s, so I was fine in a lightweight long-sleeve jersey. Most of the roads in this area have been newly chip-and-sealed, so a bit rough but nothing the bikes couldn't handle. Took High Rock to avoid the current paving on Harmony Church, which we hope will be finished soon. A bit of a headwind coming back, as we were getting some outflows from pop-up showers nearby, but none on us. 80 w, 327 cals.

FINALLY got the bikes ready to ride outside; we've been so busy with the gardens in the past month (and still are), but just couldn't wait another day. Sunny, breezy, 60s-70s, very nice day except for the high pollen counts. It felt strange to be riding this bike with a lower stem than my Trek on the trainer. I may need a stem swap, as my lower back got quite sore in the latter parts of the ride. But overall, I did fine, and it was great to be outside again. They are repaving many of the roads to the north, which will be annoying for probably months to come, so hopefully they aren't doing the same to the south. 81 w, 289 cal.

Outstanding fall foliage on this ride in Mass. So many red maples! This is a 30-mile ride, which is far more than I care to ride indoors, so I did the first half+. It's very up and down to start, but all the climbs are short, then, as the rider gets to Plum Island and the park and river, it is flat. I'll do the rest of it one day, which starts flat, then ticks up in the last half. 413' elevation gain, 74 w, 145 bpm, 344 cals.

Birthday ride! Wish it could have been my age (64), but I'm not up to those kind of distances these days, at least not this early in the season. Too bad my birthday's not in October! It's raining here, so this beautiful ride on a sunshiney day in the Austrian Alps was just what the doctor ordered. The first third was mostly climbing and the remaining 2/3 mostly a gradual descent. Got hot foot on the right on the last 15 minutes or so, due to wearing the wrong socks (too thick). 63 w, 139 bpm, 351 cals (that's what I get for doing a mostly downhill ride, sheesh!)

After finally getting this ride downloaded, I didn't have time to complete it before I had to attend to a Fedex delivery, and by then had cooled down. I'll do the full ride next time, as it was gorgeous, with bright red fall foliage. Really enjoying this Tacx app!

FulGaz crashing for me today so used the native app for my Tacx 2.0 smart trainer. Actually quite good, though it took a little getting used to. Didn't realize that the ride I chose had 907' elevation gain in only 8 miles, so it was tough! But a good workout. 83 watts avg (164 max), 91 rpm (120 rpm max), 149 avg hr (169 max).

Fascinating ride but a very bustling city w/many motorbikes and crazy drivers. I wouldn't want to ride there for real, but it was fun to visit virtually. Some parts reminded me of the Yucatan. Flat(tish) ride with only 154' elevation gain. 77 w, 144 bpm, 271 cal.

Nice ride along the river on a very wide bike and ped path...so many Japanese folks out running, walking, cycling, playing baseball...all very trim. Such a difference from in (at least parts of) the US. 84 w, 157 bpm

Second (hilly) half of ride I started Monday but wasn't feeling great. Too bad it was an overcast day, when filmed, as there were a couple of sunflower fields that would have been lovely in the sunshine. The ending town of Chinon was super charming!

Beautiful ride along the peninsula in Brittany, France. Just a few little coastal rises and falls, nothing too intense. Would love to ride there IRL. Expect it's crazy touristy in the summer, though. This ride seems to have been filmed in the off season, as many of the dwellings had storm shutters. Still a fair number of people in the town. Beautiful beaches and castle.

Did only the first half of this ride, which was mostly flat, as I realized that recovering from an infection and taking antibiotics, I didn't really want to do the hilly climbs in the second half. Started feeling a little nauseated and figured I better back off and save the second half for once I'm off the meds.

Holland is not totally flat, lots of little ups and downs (and false flats) in this one, some from bridges. I was trying to beat my time from 11 months ago, when I last did this ride, but FulGaz has changed their algorithm, as I'm seeing a pattern of having higher average power this year but slower time/average speed. So, I guess I'll just go by watts on this one, which were 5 higher (81 vs 76) than Feb 2024.

Pretty but longish feeling ride in France. The two towns were lovely, but in between got a little boring, on a long, straight rural road mostly, and mostly a false flat with only a few small climbs and descents. I was definitely feeling some saddle fatigue at the end of this one!

A hilly ride (1108' elevation gain) by my standards, a couple up to 10% grade, but none very long. Nice scenery on this island off the Italian coast. 78 w, 154 bpm, 364 calories burned (in 1:17 - pitiful - part of being petite, I guess).

Beautiful ride with the bright red maples in all their glory. Even with only 436' of ascent, this one felt hard today...maybe because I didn't do a warmup ride so started very slow. 77 watts, 149 bpm

This one also felt harder than usual...I guess I did too much yesterday with the yard work! 81 w, 157 bpm

Longest ride I've done indoors in a long time, not a terribly difficult one (580' elevation gain), but it did go on and on, rolling hills, pretty England in maybe June (very green, flowers, etc). My goal was to do it in 1:30, and I hit that on the nose even to the second! 80 w, 155 bpm

Glad I have a trainer, as I sprained a toe yesterday rather badly, so walking my bike to and from the road wouldn't have been easy. Fortunately, cycling doesn't rely on the toes, unlike many other sports, so this was something I could do, even as I limp around the house! A nice ride through a pretty French village into the countryside. Moderate difficulty level. 77 watts, 151 bpm

Pretty ride mostly in rural Scotland. Too much speed throttling on the descents, which made it hard to keep up a decent speed, because the climbs were tough - 6-9.9% - and a couple were longish. 823' elevation gain over 10 miles.

Warmup ride in steady mode - enjoyable and relatively flat ride in a beautiful area in France.

Fascinating ride into Siem Reap - I would never want to ride there! The number of motorbikes and sheer craziness of traffic was intense. Lots of tiny ups and downs, no big climbs. My right calf was super sore from a bad cramp the morning before, so I kept the mileage low today to start off the new year. 75 watts, 143 BPM.
